Every clue points at Dix. The one person standing between him and a cell is Laurel Gray, a struggling actress who swears he never left his apartment. They fall hard for each other, but the more Laurel learns about Dix, the more she wonders whether the police had him right all along.

Gloria Grahame plays Laurel so that her growing doubt becomes the picture's real suspense. Ray isn't chasing a whodunit; he's painting a brutal portrait of a man whose love is poisoned by rage, and Bogart pours something of himself into it.
