A Little Bit of Heaven

A Little Bit of Heaven (2011) is Nicole Kassell's romantic dramedy, available to watch online on iFILM. Marley keeps everyone at arm's length and jokes her way past anything serious — right up until a doctor hands her a cancer diagnosis.

Kate Hudson plays a New Orleans ad exec with plenty of friends, easy flings, and not a single real attachment. The illness puts her in the care of oncologist Julian (Gael García Bernal), a reserved and buttoned-up man who is her complete opposite. The twist she didn't see coming: falling for him scares her more than dying does. Around her swirls a colorful cast — Kathy Bates as her mother, a tight circle of girlfriends, and a brief turn from Whoopi Goldberg as a decidedly otherworldly conversation partner.

The movie swings between tears and jokes and doesn't always keep its footing; critics gave it a chilly reception. What holds it together is Hudson, playing bravado and fear at the same time, and her chemistry with Bernal. This is a film for a night when you want a simple, human cry and nothing grander.
