The Beyond

The Beyond (...E tu vivrai nel terrore! L'aldilà, 1981) is Lucio Fulci's Italian horror film, and you can watch it online on iFILM. A young New Yorker named Liza inherits a crumbling Louisiana hotel, never suspecting that a walled-up corpse rests beneath it and that the building sits over one of the seven gateways to the world of the dead.

The prologue drags us to 1927, where a mob with chains storms the hotel and destroys a painter accused of dealing with Satan. Half a century later Liza starts renovations, and the wall between the living and the dead quietly comes apart. A blind girl and her dog warn of what is coming, acid floods a basement, the dead rise, and ordinary logic dissolves into pure nightmare. Fulci was filming a bad dream, not a mystery, so the ending obeys the rules of delirium rather than plot.
