Synopsis
Oliver! (1968) is Carol Reed's British musical of Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist, and you can watch it online on iFILM. A runaway orphan flees the workhouse, falls in with a gang of London street boys, and finds something close to a family among the pickpockets for the first time in his life.
The boys answer to the Artful Dodger (Jack Wild), while the whole racket runs through Fagin, the aging fence played by Ron Moody as a figure who is both comic and oddly tender. Young Oliver (Mark Lester) is caught between gutter poverty and a shot at a better life, with the brutal Bill Sikes — Oliver Reed — looming over everything. Numbers like "Consider Yourself" and "Food, Glorious Food" have long since become standards.
The film took home the Oscar for Best Picture, and Carol Reed claimed the directing prize — a rare moment when a Dickens adaptation played like a full-blown Broadway show, dancers flooding the London streets. It runs two and a half hours and still holds up as family viewing, balancing a grim Victorian city against irresistibly catchy tunes. Made for anyone who loves the big classic movie musicals.
