Synopsis
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001) is the Chris Columbus fantasy adventure you can watch online on iFILM. Raised in a cupboard under the stairs by the spiteful Dursleys, Harry turns eleven and learns the truth: he's a wizard, and a letter from Hogwarts is waiting for him.
A train from platform 9¾ carries Harry to a castle where the staircases shift on their own and the portraits gossip. Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson play three first-years who stick together through trolls, broomsticks and a very large three-headed dog. Around them stand the giant Hagrid, the stern Professor McGonagall, the sneering Severus Snape and headmaster Dumbledore. The more the trio digs into the school's locked corners, the closer they get to a hidden object that grants endless life — and someone else wants it badly.
The film launched an eight-movie saga from J.K. Rowling's novels and pulled in close to a billion dollars worldwide. John Williams wrote the chiming theme you recognize from a single note, and a roster of British greats — Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith, Robbie Coltrane — fills out the cast.
