Synopsis
Funny Face (1957) is the Audrey Hepburn and Fred Astaire musical you can watch online on iFILM. Jo Stockton, a bookish clerk in a quiet Greenwich Village shop, gets plucked from obscurity to become the new face of a glossy fashion magazine.
Photographer Dick Avery spots something the camera loves and talks her into a shoot in Paris. Jo only agrees so she can attend a lecture by a fashionable French philosopher whose vague ideas have her hooked. Somewhere between the runway lights and the banks of the Seine, the two fall for each other without meaning to. Kay Thompson, as the magazine's steamroller editor, keeps the whole thing moving at a sprint.
Stanley Donen, who made Singin' in the Rain, directs, and the songs come straight from George and Ira Gershwin. Astaire's dance numbers and Hepburn's Givenchy wardrobe are reason enough to revisit it decades on. It's bright, featherlight studio-era charm for anyone who loves a classic Hollywood musical.
