The part turned Marcello Mastroianni into a global star. Then the suicide of his friend Steiner, a man who seemed to have everything, knocks the ground out from under him.

Fellini built the film not as a plot but as seven days and nights stitched together, a mosaic of glamour with emptiness underneath.
