Synopsis

Endeavour is still waiting on his Sergeant's exam result, and whisky does most of the talking after Joan Thursday left town. The family home feels hollow now — Sam has joined the Army, Joan is gone. Four investigations push the team somewhere unfamiliar: scientists at Lovelace College build a machine meant to think; a conservative campaigner draws a death threat while pop music and the loosening morals of the decade swirl around her; a hospital ward at Cowley General is rumoured to be cursed; and a body surfaces in the marshes, tied to a botanist who vanished five years earlier.
