Synopsis

Small Things Like These (2024) is an Irish drama starring Cillian Murphy that you can watch online on iFILM. A small town, December 1985. Coal merchant Bill Furlong hauls orders door to door, feeds five daughters, and tries hard not to get involved in anything.

Days before Christmas he delivers fuel to the local convent and glimpses what the whole town has agreed not to see: young women kept behind its walls, inside one of the Magdalene laundries where forced labor passed for penance. The sight snags on Bill's own childhood. Staying quiet, the way everyone else does, suddenly feels impossible.

Tim Mielants directed the film from Claire Keegan's slim novel, and Murphy plays it almost wordless — everything lives in his face, the pauses, the weight of a coal sack on his back. Emily Watson is quietly terrifying as the Mother Superior. This is slow, hushed cinema about the cost of ordinary decency. Action fans will fidget; lovers of intimate character drama will not.
