Synopsis
Shadow of Fire (ほかげ, 2023) is a Japanese war drama you can watch online on iFILM. Written and directed by Shinya Tsukamoto, starring Shuri and Mirai Moriyama.
Japan, late 1945. The surrender is signed; nobody told the body. A nameless war orphan sleeps in the charred shell of a diner near a black-market strip. Two damaged adults drift into his life: a young woman surviving the only way she can, and a soldier back from the Pacific whose hands still close into fists without warning. None of the three has anyone left. They become something like a family — not by design, just by the slow logic of people with nowhere else to fall.
Tsukamoto, who made Tetsuo: The Iron Man and revisited postwar trauma in his 2014 Fires on the Plain, shoots the aftermath of war as a physical condition: ash, involuntary violence, a body running on survival instinct after the mind has given up.
