Etegan: Bashkir Legends In Song (2014), directed by Aysyuak Yumakulov, is an ethnographic film you can watch online on iFILM. It is built around a Bashkir legend about seven young women who chose to fight an overwhelming force of raiders rather than surrender their homeland — and who, dying in an unequal battle, rise to the upper world and become the stars of the Big Dipper, the constellation Bashkirs call Etegan.
The film carries almost no conventional dialogue. Folk songs do the telling instead, and through them the ancient Bashkir view of the universe unfolds: three realms — the World of Angels, the World of the Living and the World of the Dead.
