Synopsis

The Right Stuff (1983) is Philip Kaufman's epic historical drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. A jet tears off a carrier deck and punches through the sound barrier. From that moment, the race for space is on.

The film tracks nearly two decades, from test pilot Chuck Yeager (Sam Shepard) flying past Mach 1 over the Mojave desert to the selection of the Mercury Seven. John Glenn (Ed Harris), Gordon Cooper (Dennis Quaid) and Gus Grissom (Fred Ward) line up for a shot at orbit. Each one pays for it: wrecked planes, friends buried, wives who wait by the phone for news that may never be good. Barbara Hershey plays Glennis Yeager, who understands that bargain better than anyone.

Adapted from Tom Wolfe's account of America's first manned spaceflight program, this three-hour film won four Oscars for editing, sound and score. What sticks is the tone: courage here is stubborn work at the edge of survival, not a speech. Stream The Right Stuff (1983) online on iFILM.
