Synopsis
Yermak (1997) is a Russian-German historical drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Vladimir Krasnopolsky and Valery Uskov — the pair behind Soviet television's most ambitious historical epics, including Shadows Disappear at Noon and The Eternal Call.
The story is set in the second half of the 16th century, during Ivan the Terrible's reign. Cossack ataman Yermak Timofeyevich leads an armed expedition into Siberia — territory no Moscow tsar had yet claimed — negotiating and fighting his way through a succession of local khanates, with his men dying around him. Viktor Stepanov plays him not as a monument but as a calculating leader trying to keep a ragged force alive long enough to succeed. Yevgeny Yevstigneyev, Sergei Garmash, and Irina Alfyorova give the supporting roles genuine weight.
Shot on location across Russia's vast eastern landscapes, the series covers the campaign that eventually brought Siberia under Russian control. Stream Yermak on iFILM.
