Synopsis
"Two Soldiers" (1943) is a Soviet wartime drama you can watch online on iFILM — directed by Leonid Lukov, with Mark Bernes and Boris Andreyev heading the cast.
Arkady from Odessa and Sasha from the Urals end up in the same unit. One is a talker — sharp, restless, always finding the bright side. The other is quiet and steady, not given to speeches. A trench makes them friends. Lukov films the friendship straight, without sentimentality: arguments, debts, and the moment when one of them actually comes through.
Lukov adapted Lev Slavin's story "My Fellow Countrymen" mid-war, in 1943. Bernes sang "Dark Night" (Tyomnaya Noch) for the film's soundtrack — the song circulated on the front lines before the picture even screened, and has been inseparable from this film ever since.
