Chouf

Chouf (2016) is a French crime film directed by Karim Dridi, available to watch online on iFILM. The title is Arabic slang for the lookouts who stand watch over Marseille's drug corners — the ones who spot the police coming.

Sofiane is twenty, sharp, and studying his way out of the neighbourhood where he grew up. He comes back for the holidays and sees his brother, a street-level dealer, shot in front of him. He drops his studies, steps into the network, and moves up fast. The film tracks how quickly the system absorbs him, and how much harder it is to leave than to rise.
