Synopsis
A Secret (Un secret, 2007) is a French drama by Claude Miller that you can watch online on iFILM. It adapts Philippe Grimbert's autobiographical novel about the things parents bury so their children never have to know them.
In early-1950s Paris, frail and withdrawn François invents an older brother — stronger and braver than he'll ever be. His athletic, impatient father Maxime (Patrick Bruel) has little time for such a dreamy boy. Then, on his fifteenth birthday, the neighbor Louise (Julie Depardieu) finally tells François who his family really were before he was born, and why the apartment is so full of silences.
Miller cuts between two timelines: postwar Paris and the years when occupation closed in on France's Jewish families. Cécile de France and Ludivine Sagnier play the two women whose lives form the secret itself. Julie Depardieu took home a César for her role as Louise. It's a quiet, restrained film about guilt, memory and the cost of saying nothing, made for anyone who loves European drama that never raises its voice. Stream A Secret (2007) online on iFILM.
