Buffy is a textbook L.A. high-school cheerleader — parties, the gym, the mall, vague plans about Europe. Then a strange man tells her she's the chosen one, fated to kill vampires. Turns out the undead have been living among us all along, and the carefree blonde has to trade pom-poms for a wooden stake. The whole thing is played tongue-in-cheek, mixing blood, gags and teen-movie attitude.

Fran Rubel Kuzui directed from a script by Joss Whedon. The cast includes Kristy Swanson, Donald Sutherland, Rutger Hauer, Luke Perry and a very young Hilary Swank, with Paul Reubens as a vampire henchman. It's noticeably goofier than the show and runs on early-'90s charm — worth a look for fans of the franchise and anyone who enjoys retro horror-comedy.
