Synopsis
Axe. 1943 (Topor. 1943) is a Russian war drama you can watch online in good quality. Director Vadim Ostrovsky sets it in the turning-point year of the Eastern Front, with Andrey Smolyakov, Alexander Golubev and Boris Galkin among the cast.
Just before a major Red Army push, Captain Belov's scouting party stumbles on a German tank division dug in and camouflaged near the village of Anino. The trap is set, and the scouts are the only men alive who know about it. Wounded, Belov sends soldier Ivan Rodin back to warn headquarters. Ivan makes it, reports everything, even recites the division's tactical number. Command doesn't buy it. Worse, they arrest him as a suspected enemy plant. Only Colonel Alyoshin keeps fighting for him, pushing the brass to send a second group to Anino with Ivan himself as the guide.
A sequel to the war picture Axe, this one runs on a lean, anxious idea rather than huge battle panoramas: what do you do when you hold the truth and nobody believes you, with the clock running down to the strike.
