The Swamp (Season 1)

The Swamp (Topi, 2021) is a Russian mystery series directed by Vladimir Mirzoev and written by Dmitry Glukhovsky, available to watch online on iFILM. Five young Muscovites, each cornered by their own dead end, leave the city for a remote monastery beside a half-abandoned village with the ominous name Topi.

They treat the trip as an escape — away from debts, illness, other people's demands and their own guilt. But the place refuses to let go. Inexplicable things start happening, the locals behave strangely, and the line between waking life and delusion dissolves. The deeper the group sinks into this land, the closer it brings the very things they ran from. You can't, it turns out, outrun yourself.

Ivan Yankovsky, Tikhon Zhiznevsky and Maxim Sukhanov lead the cast, and the eight episodes lean on the thick, uneasy atmosphere of the Russian backcountry rather than on plot twists. Mirzoev shoots slowly, through symbols and dreams, closer to a parable than a standard horror show.
