Dan's girlfriend is past her limit, his friends are cheerfully useless, and his father (played by Rik Mayall in one of his last TV appearances) seems to have made it a personal mission to humiliate him at every turn. At school Dan muddles through the same lesson recycled weekly and is inexplicably popular with almost every pupil.
