Synopsis
Old Man Khottabych (1957) is a Soviet fairy-tale comedy you can watch online on iFILM. Director Gennady Kazansky adapted Lazar Lagin's much-loved children's novel: twelve-year-old Volka dives into the Moscow River and pulls an ancient sealed jar from the riverbed.
When he opens it at home, out steps Hassan Abdurrahman ibn Khottab — a genie who spent two full millennia locked inside. The grateful Khottabych appoints Volka his master on the spot, sends a camel caravan loaded with treasure to the boy's doorstep, and sets up a magic-carpet trip to India. The trouble is that thousand-year-old wish-granting runs badly at odds with the routines of a Soviet schoolboy, and every fulfilled wish tends to make things worse before they get better. Nikolai Volkov's performance in the title role has been quoted by heart across generations.
A warm, genuinely funny family film that has outlasted its era. Watch Old Man Khottabych (1957) online on iFILM.
