Synopsis
Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale – Part 1: The Sun Flag (賽德克‧巴萊:太陽旗, 2011) is a Taiwanese historical epic from Wei Te-sheng, and you can watch it online on iFILM. This opening half of a four-hour saga follows the mountain-dwelling Seediq, whose forest world is upended when a foreign army marches in.
The early 1900s. Japan takes the island and sets about turning headhunters into obedient subjects — banning their tattoos, their tongue, their hunting rites, herding the men into logging camps for next to nothing. Chief Mona Rudao swallows the humiliation for decades, keeping a private tally of every insult. The Sun Flag brings that ledger to its boiling point: the morning whole villages decide it is better to die free than live broken. Nolay Piho plays Mona Rudao, with Japanese actor Masanobu Ando among the cast.
Wei spent years and nearly bankrupted himself on the production, and in return he hauled a near-forgotten chapter back onto the screen — an indigenous revolt against the colonial machine, performed largely in the Seediq language. Brutal, bloody and oddly beautiful, it's a film for anyone who craves history on a vast scale. Stream Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale – The Sun Flag (2011) online on iFILM.
