Synopsis
Strange Cargo (1940) is available to watch online on iFILM — a Frank Borzage adventure drama from MGM, starring Clark Gable and Joan Crawford. A group of convicts breaks out of Devil's Island. Jungle ahead, guards behind.
Among the escapees: a scheming opportunist named Verne (Gable) and a stranded cabaret singer, Julie (Crawford), here through no plan of her own. Their party picks up a quiet stranger called Cambreau, whose unruffled calm unsettles every man around him — some are drawn to him, others turn wary. Peter Lorre plays the informant Milo with his usual talent for making a small role count.
What separates this from a standard prison-break picture is the current running beneath the adventure. Borzage embeds an unmistakable religious allegory into the jungle escape, and several censorship boards banned the film on those grounds. That history of controversy is part of what keeps it worth revisiting. Stream Strange Cargo (1940) on iFILM.
