Synopsis
The Year of the Shark (L'Année du requin, 2022) is a French horror-comedy about a man-eating shark you can watch online on iFILM, and a wry riff on the Jaws formula. Brothers Ludovic and Zoran Boukherma direct, turning a sleepy seaside town in southwest France into a stage for full-blown panic.
A surfer vanishes off the beach, and the grim truth surfaces fast: a hungry shark has slipped into the quiet harbor. Maja, a coast-guard lifeguard, was already planning her retirement send-off when she takes on the most dangerous job of her career instead. Help is thin on the ground. The local shark hunters aren't the sharpest, and town officials would rather bury the story than scare the tourists away.
Marina Foïs plays Maja completely straight, which is exactly why the absurdity around her lands so well. Kad Merad and Jean-Pascal Zadi pile on the comedy. The Boukherma brothers blend genre dread with dry French wit, never quite telling you when to laugh and when to flinch.
