Synopsis
The Execution (Kazn, 2022) is a Russian crime thriller from Lado Kvataniya, available to watch online on iFILM. A serial-murder case dragged on for a decade and was finally shelved. Then a survivor turns up, and the whole thing has to be reopened.
Senior investigator Issa Davydov once looked the other way on thin evidence, because the system wanted a closed file and a name. Now that shortcut catches up with him, and he has to force a confession out of the man he may have framed or freed. The film refuses a straight timeline, jumping between the late 1980s and the mid-90s so you assemble the truth from fragments. Niko Tavadze, Daniil Spivakovsky, Yuliya Snigir and Aglaya Tarasova anchor a strong cast against a bleak late-Soviet backdrop.
Music-video director Kvataniya's feature debut is brutal and sharply styled: cold color, restless editing, the rot of an era where nobody actually wants the truth. Fans of David Fincher's killer hunts or Nordic noir will find plenty to chew on. Stream The Execution (2022) online on iFILM.
