Synopsis
Oliver Twist (2007), Season 1 is the five-part BBC drama you can watch online on iFILM — a tight retelling of Dickens that folds the whole novel into five episodes.
A workhouse orphan is sold to an undertaker, runs from the cruelty and lands in London. The Artful Dodger pulls him into Fagin's nest of pickpockets, and from there the boy becomes a bargaining chip. Monks offers Fagin money to see the child dead. Bill Sikes settles things with his fists. The one person who tries to keep Oliver alive is Nancy, and she pays for it. This is a grimy, rain-soaked London with none of the storybook gloss.
Timothy Spall plays Fagin as a worn-down survivor rather than a cartoon villain, with Tom Hardy as a terrifying Sikes and Sophie Okonedo as Nancy. Pick this one if you want the dark, adult adaptation, not the musical. Stream Oliver Twist Season 1 online on iFILM.
