Synopsis
The Rabbi's Cat (Le Chat du rabbin, 2011) is a French animated film you can watch online on iFILM, co-directed by Joann Sfar and Antoine Delesvaux. Set in early-20th-century colonial Algeria — a place where a Jewish quarter, a mosque and a French administration shared the same dusty streets — the film opens with a simple domestic incident: the rabbi's cat eats the parrot and immediately starts talking.
What follows is a theological comedy. The cat argues for a bar mitzvah, debates the Talmud, and lies with complete confidence. Voices include François Morel, Mathieu Amalric, and Mohamed Fellag. Sfar adapted the script from his own graphic novel series, and the hand-drawn animation carries the warm, sun-bleached look of Algerian watercolours.
Adult animation this sharp about religion and identity is rare. Stream The Rabbi's Cat (2011) online on iFILM.
