Synopsis
Operation Y and Other Shurik's Adventures (1965) is a Soviet comedy you can watch online on iFILM. Leonid Gaidai tells three separate stories about Shurik — a shy, bespectacled student who keeps blundering into absurd trouble and somehow always lands on his feet. Aleksandr Demyanenko plays him.
In "Workmate," Shurik is sent to a construction site to teach a hulking troublemaker some manners, and the bully gets a thorough comeuppance. In "Déjà vu," he spends a whole day shadowing a stranger named Lida while cramming for an exam, never noticing what he's doing. And in the title segment, the famous trio — the Fool, the Coward and the Pro, played by Yuri Nikulin, Georgy Vitsin and Yevgeny Morgunov — plot a staged warehouse robbery, only to find one skinny student standing in their way.
Roughly seventy million people saw it in its first year, and its lines turned into everyday catchphrases across the country. Gaidai leans on physical, almost silent-film gags where the stunt matters more than the dialogue, which is exactly why it still plays — first-time viewers laugh just as hard.
