Synopsis
Woman at War (Kona fer í stríð, 2018) is an Icelandic eco-thriller laced with deadpan comedy that you can watch online on iFILM. Halla teaches a community choir by day. By night she shoots cables off the power lines feeding a Highland aluminium smelter.
Halldóra Geirharðsdóttir plays this one-woman saboteur waging a quiet war against industry, hunted by drones, helicopters and a manhunt closing in around her. Then word arrives that her long-dormant adoption request has come through: a young orphan in Ukraine is waiting for her. Saving the wilderness and becoming a mother at once may not be possible, and she has little time to choose.
Director Benedikt Erlingsson pulls off something odd and wonderful, even staging the film's musicians inside the frame alongside Halla. It was Iceland's Oscar submission and a Cannes prize-winner.
