Synopsis
Azur & Asmar: The Princes' Quest (Azur et Asmar, 2006) is Michel Ocelot's hand-drawn animated fable, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Two boys grow up like brothers under one roof: fair, blue-eyed Azur, son of the castle's lady, and dark-eyed Asmar, son of the nurse who raises them both. Then they are torn apart.
Years on, each crosses the sea chasing the same bedtime story: a hidden Djinn Fairy waiting to be freed. They arrive as rivals. The foreign land turns on Azur, where his pale eyes are read as a curse, forcing him to travel half-blind and lean on strangers. A childhood lullaby, two languages, and an old wound all tangle on the road ahead.
Ocelot built the film in flat, ornamental color drawn from Persian miniatures and Moorish tilework, so every frame reads like stained glass. There's no real villain here. The trouble comes from people misreading one another, which is why the story lands with kids and adults alike. Some dialogue stays in Arabic, unsubtitled and on purpose.
