Freeheld

Freeheld (2015) is a drama drawn from a true story, and you can watch it online on iFILM. It follows New Jersey police detective Laurel Hester, who receives a terminal cancer diagnosis and then fights to leave her pension to the person she loves.

Julianne Moore plays Laurel, who gave more than two decades to the force. Her partner is car mechanic Stacie Andree, played by Elliot Page, and the two have only just started building a life together. As the illness closes in, Laurel asks her county to pass her pension benefits to Stacie, exactly as a married colleague's would transfer. The board of freeholders says no. Michael Shannon plays Laurel's longtime detective partner, while Steve Carell turns up as a loud, determined activist.

Director Peter Sollett based the film on the case behind an Oscar-winning short documentary. It's a quiet, restrained picture, more interested in dignity and stubbornness than in big speeches, and it rests on the understated work of Moore and Page.
