Synopsis
The Party (2017) is Sally Potter's black-and-white tragicomedy, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Janet has just landed a cabinet post in the shadow government and invites her closest friends round to celebrate. They arrive with flowers. They leave through the wreckage.
The whole thing unfolds in one modest London house — kitchen, living room, garden — running barely over seventy minutes of near real-time. As Janet (Kristin Scott Thomas) accepts the congratulations, her husband Bill lets slip a line that detonates the evening. Then it cascades: affairs, a grim diagnosis, cocaine in the bathroom, and a gun nobody should have brought. The acid-tongued April (Patricia Clarkson) narrates everyone's collapse with lethal timing, banker Tom (Cillian Murphy) sweats and snorts, and a lesbian couple picks the worst possible moment to announce triplets.
The ensemble is the real draw here: Timothy Spall, Cherry Jones, Emily Mortimer, and one of Bruno Ganz's final roles. Potter stages it like a vicious chamber play, watching middle-class certainties crack one by one under nervous laughter. Perfect for anyone who loves sharp dialogue and loathes small talk.
