Synopsis

Room 237 (2012) is Rodney Ascher's documentary you can watch online on iFILM. It skips Kubrick's life story entirely and dives into a single film, letting five obsessives lay out what they swear the director buried inside The Shining.

Their theories play as voiceover, running over clips from the movie itself. One reader sees the Overlook Hotel as a story about the slaughter of Native Americans; another reads it as the Holocaust; a third argues, in full seriousness, that Kubrick helped fake the Apollo moon landing. Ascher never takes sides. He just lets each voice finish, slowing and looping familiar shots until a carpet pattern, a typewriter, and the number on a door start to feel like code.

The result is less about The Shining than about how obsession makes us find meaning, real or not. A genuinely odd, fascinating watch for anyone who has paused Kubrick frame by frame. Stream Room 237 (2012) online on iFILM.
