Synopsis
Fisherman's Friends (2019) is a British comedy-drama based on a real story — watch it online on iFILM. In 2010, Universal Records signed ten Cornish fishermen who had been singing traditional sea shanties on the harbour for years and had no interest in fame whatsoever.
The film follows Danny, a jaded London music executive played by Daniel Mays, who turns up in the village on a weekend trip and bets his colleagues he can sign the fishermen — as a joke. Except it stops being a joke. James Purefoy plays Jim, the group's de facto leader, a man who trusts the sea far more than he trusts the music industry, and Tuppence Middleton plays his daughter, who has every reason to distrust Danny. Director Chris Foggin keeps things warm without turning sentimental, and the shanties actually get under your skin by the end. Stream Fisherman's Friends online on iFILM.
