Synopsis

Junior American diplomat William Gridley rents a room from the charming Mrs. Hardwick and falls for her immediately. The neighbors are less charmed: her husband vanished some time ago, and the police have never fully accepted her account. Gridley's boss, Ambassador Pomfrey (Astaire), tries every angle to move his subordinate out of that house. Gridley won't budge.
Novak plays the landlady straight — cool, composed, genuinely ambiguous about what she may have done — while Lemmon handles every comic complication the script throws at him.
