Season 1
Synopsis
The Devil Next Door (2019), Season 1 — a five-episode Netflix documentary, watch online on iFILM. John Demjanjuk, a retired Ohio autoworker and grandfather, is extradited to Israel and put on trial as Ivan the Terrible — the most feared guard at the Treblinka death camp.
The series follows the full arc of the case. Treblinka survivors testify in person, identifying the man in the courtroom decades after the war. The defense challenges the credibility of aging eyewitness memory and contests the authenticity of an identity card pulled from KGB records. Then the Berlin Wall falls. Documents from Eastern European archives begin to surface, and what had looked like a clear verdict becomes something far more complicated.
Five episodes build a portrait of a legal case where certainty keeps slipping through everyone's hands. The documentary earns its ambiguity rather than manufacturing it — this is a story about how justice works, and sometimes doesn't, when the crimes are fifty years old.
