Synopsis

Ila cooks an elaborate meal for her husband, hoping to win back his attention. The tin goes astray and lands instead with Saajan, a gruff widower on the edge of retirement (Irrfan Khan). When Ila realizes a stranger ate her food, she tucks a note into the box. So begins a correspondence between two lonely people who have never met — a make-believe world traded back and forth in a lunchbox, slowly crowding out the lives they actually live.
Batra's debut skips the songs and dances of mainstream Bollywood for something hushed and intimate, a story about big-city solitude.
