Synopsis

Pumping Iron (1977) is the documentary that put competitive bodybuilding on the map, and you can watch it online on iFILM. It follows the run-up to the 1975 Mr. Olympia and Mr. Universe contests, with 28-year-old Arnold Schwarzenegger chasing a sixth straight title.

The camera trails the lifters through Gold's Gym in Venice Beach and into the chaos backstage. Arnold isn't just lifting here; he's running mind games on his rivals, unsettling them with a grin and a well-placed remark. Standing against him are the huge, soft-spoken newcomer Lou Ferrigno, the elegant Frenchman Serge Nubret, and Franco Columbu. How much is real and how much is staged for the lens stays an open question, and that ambiguity gives the film its bite.

The movie dragged bodybuilding out of the fringes into the mainstream and effectively launched Arnold's Hollywood career. It's essential viewing for anyone curious about sport, raw charisma, and how a star is actually made. Stream Pumping Iron online on iFILM.
