Synopsis
Black Sabbath (I tre volti della paura, 1963) is Mario Bava's horror anthology, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Three separate tales of terror, all introduced by horror icon Boris Karloff.
The first follows a woman whose phone won't stop ringing — a graveyard voice promises her death and narrates her every move, as if it were already in the room. In the second, Karloff himself plays a man who comes home to his family changed, a bloodthirsty thing dragged out of Eastern European folklore. The last is short and cruel: a nurse steals a ring from a dead woman's finger and pays dearly for it. Italy and France, 95 minutes, built on color and shadow rather than gore.
Bava painted with light here — those sickly greens and deep reds became his signature and shaped the giallo wave that followed. The band took its name straight off this film's poster. This one is for viewers who like their scares slow, gorgeous and free of cheap jump cuts. Stream Black Sabbath (1963) online on iFILM.
