Synopsis

One morning, California wakes to a pink fog at every state border — and every Mexican-born resident has vanished overnight. Fields go unharvested. Restaurant kitchens sit empty. Construction stops. The governor holds a press conference in front of nobody in particular.
Arau's film — a Spanish-Mexican-American co-production — is less interested in laughs than in the discomfort underneath them. Shot in fake-news-broadcast style, it works best when the absurdity stays close to the mundane: the quietly collapsed economy, the panic at the grocery store. Not a comfortable comedy.
