Synopsis

The Merry Widow (1934) is an Ernst Lubitsch musical comedy you can watch online on iFILM — his MGM adaptation of Franz Lehár's operetta, with Maurice Chevalier and Jeanette MacDonald in roles that fit them like tailored suits.

The tiny kingdom of Marshovia has exactly one economic pillar: the fortune of its young merry widow Sonia. When she heads to Paris to find a husband, the king dispatches Count Danilo — a celebrated charmer with an impressive track record — to bring her back home along with her money. Danilo has no trouble with the romance part. Convincing Sonia of its sincerity turns out to be another matter entirely.

What separates this from a standard drawing-room farce is what Hollywood critics came to call the Lubitsch touch — the habit of letting a glance or a closed door carry more weight than a spoken punchline. Lehár's score does the rest. Watch The Merry Widow (1934) online on iFILM.
