About

Synopsis

Jules and Jim (Jules et Jim, 1962) is François Truffaut's drama, available to watch online on iFILM. In Paris before the Great War, shy Austrian Jules and outgoing Frenchman Jim are inseparable friends until Catherine walks in.

Jeanne Moreau plays a woman who simply refuses to choose. She marries Jules but loves both men, and the three try living as one household, first lightly, then with growing pain. The war splits the friends across enemy lines. When they reunite, the old ease is gone: jealousy, tenderness and Catherine's restlessness knot together into something none of them can undo.

Adapted from Henri-Pierre Roché's novel, the film became a touchstone of the French New Wave, with its jump cuts, narration and Raoul Coutard's roaming handheld camera. It isn't really about a love triangle as plot; it's about how three people can't stay happy together for long. Best for viewers who want lightness with a quiet catastrophe underneath. Stream Jules and Jim (1962) online on iFILM.
