John Cusack plays the reporter whose easy assignment turns sharp. After a lavish Christmas party at a grand antebellum mansion, a young man is shot dead, and the host — a smooth antiques dealer and millionaire played by Kevin Spacey — goes on trial. The longer the writer stays, the deeper Savannah pulls him in: voodoo priestesses, old-money eccentrics, and Lady Chablis, who plays herself.

Eastwood adapted John Berendt's bestseller, a book drawn from a real Savannah story. The city itself is half the film: humid nights, Spanish moss on the oaks, graveyard lore.
