Transamerica

Bree bails the boy out but can't bring herself to say who she really is. What follows is a cross-country haul in a beat-up station wagon, from Manhattan back toward Los Angeles, through cheap motels and long stretches of awkward silence. Toby (Kevin Zegers) is a runaway hustling on the streets, and he assumes his traveling companion is a church do-gooder. Every mile pulls them closer than either will admit.

Felicity Huffman vanishes into the role, a turn that earned her an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe win. First-time director Duncan Tucker keeps the tone dry rather than weepy, trading big breakdowns for small, wincing comedy.
