Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death and Rebirth
Welcome to the apocalypse.
Synopsis
Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death and Rebirth (1997) is the cult Gainax anime feature from Hideaki Anno that you can watch online on iFILM. It's a two-part film built around the landmark Neon Genesis Evangelion TV series.
The movie splits in half. Death recuts the show: teenage pilots Shinji, Rei and Asuka climb into towering biomechanical Evas to hold off the enigmatic Angels, while the NERV organization hides what the whole project is really for. Anno scrambles the timeline, framing the story around the kids breaking down inside rather than the battles themselves. Rebirth is the opening stretch of the ending to come — it cuts off mid-breath, the footage that would later expand into The End of Evangelion.
Going in without the series is nearly pointless, and the film is honest about that. This isn't an entry point but a second look for anyone who's already survived all twenty-six episodes and wants them reframed before the apocalyptic finale. Bleak melancholy, raw talk about the fear of intimacy, and Shiro Sagisu's unmistakable score — the exact things fans still argue over today.
