They Came Together

They Came Together (2014) is a spoof comedy with Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler that you can watch online on iFILM. It takes every romantic-comedy cliché ever made and runs them straight into the ground.

Over dinner, two couples recount how the leads met, and the story sounds suspiciously familiar. Joel works for a giant corporation whose candy chain is about to crush Molly's tiny, adorable sweet shop. They loathe each other at first, then of course fall in love. Cue the whole checklist: unbearable relatives, ridiculous exes, a New York that feels like another character, a fight over nothing, and a tearful reunion in the rain. The film names each trope out loud and pushes it to absurd extremes.

Directed by David Wain in the same deadpan vein as Wet Hot American Summer, it fires jokes in a relentless stream — plenty miss, but the hit rate stays high enough. The supporting bench is stacked with Bill Hader, Cobie Smulders, Ed Helms, Christopher Meloni and Michael Ian Black.
