Broker

Broker (2022) is Hirokazu Kore-eda's drama you can watch online on iFILM. Deacon Sang-hyun is drowning in debt; his accomplice Dong-soo works beside a church baby box. Together they take an abandoned infant, planning to place him with a family for a quiet fee.

The next morning the baby's mother comes back. Instead of calling the police when she learns what the two men do, she climbs into their beat-up van and joins the search for the "right" parents. What forms is an odd little crew on the road: two child brokers, a young mother, a borrowed baby, and a pair of detectives trailing them, waiting for the sale so they can make the arrest. Song Kang-ho, Gang Dong-won, Bae Doona and singer-actress IU play it so warmly that judging any of them feels impossible.

This is Korea seen through the lens of the director of Shoplifters: a gentle film asking who really counts as family. Song Kang-ho's performance took the Best Actor prize at Cannes.
