Synopsis
The Last Metro (Le Dernier Métro, 1980) is a François Truffaut drama you can watch online on iFILM. In Nazi-occupied Paris, a small theater races to open a new play while its real owner hides in the cellar below the stage.
Everyone believes the Jewish director Lucas Steiner has fled France. He hasn't. He's living under the floorboards, listening to rehearsals through the boards and feeding notes to his wife, the leading actress Marion (Catherine Deneuve). She keeps the company running, smuggles food downstairs past informers, fends off a powerful German admirer, and slowly falls for her new co-star Bernard (Gérard Depardieu). The war stays offstage; the real pressure builds behind the curtain.
This is Truffaut on how art survives under tyranny, and it swept ten César Awards, still a record for the ceremony. Deneuve and Depardieu play it all in restraint, never overplaying the danger. Best for viewers who like patient, grown-up cinema about loyalty and quiet courage. Stream The Last Metro (1980) online on iFILM.
