Synopsis
Water Lilies (Naissance des pieuvres, 2007) is Céline Sciamma's French coming-of-age drama, ready to watch online on iFILM. One sweltering summer in the Paris suburbs, a public pool and a synchronized swimming squad become the stage for three fifteen-year-old girls and the longings none of them can name.
Quiet Marie joins the team, but her real reason isn't sport — it's Floriane, the squad's reckless star, trailed by rumors she half-enjoys. Marie's friend Anne, awkward and aching, chases a boy who barely notices her. Sciamma films first desire without melodrama: a glance across the lane ropes, a held breath, the small cruelties of jealousy. Pauline Acquart plays Marie, with Adèle Haenel making her screen debut as Floriane.
This was Sciamma's first feature, years before Portrait of a Lady on Fire, and her signature is already here — a patient female gaze, few words, plenty of tension just under the surface. A delicate pick for fans of European arthouse about growing up. Stream Water Lilies (2007) online on iFILM.
