Synopsis

The Sound Barrier (1952), directed by David Lean, is a British drama you can watch online on iFILM — the story of engineers and test pilots pushing jet aircraft past the speed of sound in the years just after World War II. Ralph Richardson, Ann Todd and Nigel Patrick lead the cast.

Aircraft manufacturer Ridgefield (Richardson) wants one thing: a plane that can punch through the sonic wall. His son-in-law Tony, a decorated RAF pilot, joins as chief test pilot — and each flight pushes the prototype further than anything it has flown before. Ridgefield's daughter Sue watches the test runs from the ground, calculating the odds in ways her husband refuses to.

Lean shot the film with real British jet prototypes in flight, giving it an authenticity that drama rarely achieves. The picture took the BAFTA for Best British Film. What makes it linger is how Lean holds two things together without choosing between them: the cold engineering logic of progress and the private cost it extracts from the people inside it.
